Amazon is one of the few companies that tells you the answer format up front. Most candidates still lose the story in the middle, because Task and Action blur together and the Result arrives without a number.

Quick Answer

STAR is Situation, Task, Action, Result. Amazon asks for it explicitly and grades each story against its Leadership Principles, so a strong answer names one principle, keeps Situation short, makes Action first-person and specific, and closes on a quantified Result. The most common failure is not structure at all: it is a story where the candidate says 'we' throughout and finishes without a number.

Why Amazon leans on STAR harder than other companies

Amazon publishes its Leadership Principles and tells candidates to prepare structured examples. Interviewers write up each story against a principle and a bar raiser reviews the set. That means your story is not judged on how interesting it is; it is judged on whether an interviewer who was not in the room can reconstruct what you specifically did.

Where PM candidates actually lose the story

Structure is rarely the problem. Specificity is. These are the failure modes that show up most in mock interviews.

A worked example, compressed

Situation: our onboarding completion had been flat at 41% for two quarters. Task: I owned activation and had one engineer for six weeks. Action: I pulled the funnel by step, found 60% of the drop was a single permissions screen, wrote three variants, shipped the simplest one behind a flag, and held the rest back so we could read the result cleanly. Result: completion moved to 52% in four weeks, and I killed the other two variants because the lift came entirely from the first. That is roughly ninety seconds, it is first-person, it names a tradeoff, and it ends on a number. It maps to Dive Deep and Bias for Action without needing to say so.

What STAR does not cover

STAR is a behavioral format. It does nothing for Amazon's product sense or analytical rounds, and a candidate who over-rehearses stories often sounds mechanical by the third one. Prepare six stories that each carry a real conflict and a real number, then practise telling them differently rather than adding a seventh.

FAQ

What does STAR stand for in an Amazon interview?

Situation, Task, Action, Result. Amazon asks candidates to use it for behavioral questions and grades each story against one or more of its Leadership Principles.

How long should a STAR answer be?

Around 90 seconds to two minutes. Keep Situation to two sentences, spend most of the time on Action, and always finish on a quantified Result.

How many STAR stories should I prepare for Amazon?

Six is usually enough if each one carries a genuine conflict and a measurable outcome. Different interviewers cover different principles, so avoid reusing one story across the whole loop.

Do I have to name the Leadership Principle out loud?

No. The story should clearly belong to one, but naming it explicitly can sound rehearsed. Let the content do the work and answer directly if the interviewer asks which principle you had in mind.
