Problem Statement Description
Ecommerce operates a marketplace where buyers discover products through search, recommendations, category browsing, and seller listings, then complete purchases through checkout, payment, delivery, and returns flows. A competitor is gaining attention by improving both product discovery and checkout, creating pressure on Ecommerce’s purchase conversion, especially among first-time buyers who have lower trust and less familiarity with the marketplace.
You are being asked to define what Ecommerce should do next from a product strategy perspective. The response should frame the competitive threat, identify where Ecommerce may be vulnerable or advantaged, and evaluate strategic options across discovery, checkout, trust, seller quality, payments, and post-purchase confidence. The focus is not on designing a single feature, but on deciding where the company should place its bets and how it should sequence action.
Your strategy should consider customer, seller, marketplace, and business implications. It should also account for constraints such as catalog quality, seller incentives, payment reliability, privacy, accessibility, operational cost, and the risk of over-optimizing conversion at the expense of trust or long-term retention.
The experience should consider:
- Which user segment is most exposed to the competitor’s attack, especially first-time buyers and high-intent shoppers
- Where conversion is breaking down across discovery, product evaluation, cart, checkout, payment, and post-purchase confidence
- Strategic options such as improving relevance, trust signals, checkout speed, payment success, seller quality, pricing transparency, or returns confidence
- Ecommerce’s right to win based on marketplace scale, customer data, seller network, logistics, brand trust, or operational capabilities
- Trade-offs between short-term conversion gains and long-term marketplace health
- Risks around privacy, responsible personalization, seller gaming, accessibility, fraud, and operational load
- Decision gates and metrics that would indicate whether to invest, test, partner, copy, differentiate, or deprioritize
The goal is to present a clear strategic recommendation for how Ecommerce should respond to the competitor’s attack, including the reasoning behind the choice, the alternatives considered, the key risks, and how the company would know whether the strategy is working.
