Build a metric tree for App Store after a major redesign

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Apple is a consumer hardware, software, and services company; its products include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iOS, App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV+. App Store is Apple's app marketplace; its products include app discovery, downloads, purchases, subscriptions, reviews, developer distribution, and payment flows.

Apple has completed a major redesign of the App Store experience across discovery, search, editorial browsing, app detail pages, and conversion flows. The redesign is intended to improve how users find high-quality apps and how creators/developers reach the right audience, while preserving Apple’s standards for trust, privacy, accessibility, and premium user experience.

You are asked to build a metric tree that would help the App Store team evaluate whether the redesign is successful. The metric tree should connect top-level business and ecosystem outcomes to user behaviors, creator outcomes, and product experience indicators, without relying on a single vanity metric.

Your scope should include both consumer-side behavior, such as browsing, search, installs, purchases, subscriptions, and retention, and creator-side outcomes, such as discoverability, conversion quality, monetization, and fairness of exposure. Assume the redesign may affect different app categories, traffic sources, geographies, device types, and user cohorts differently.

The metric tree should consider:

- The North Star or top-level outcome and why it is appropriate for the App Store after a redesign

- Clear metric definitions, including numerator, denominator, time window, and unit of analysis

- Funnel metrics across discovery, consideration, conversion, activation, engagement, and monetization

- Creator-focused metrics that capture quality of traffic, visibility, conversion, and long-term value

- Cohorts and segments such as new vs. returning users, paid vs. free apps, subscriptions, app categories, regions, and device types

- Instrumentation needed to measure redesigned surfaces accurately, including impressions, ranking exposure, taps, installs, purchases, refunds, and downstream engagement

- Guardrail metrics for privacy, trust, accessibility, app quality, user frustration, performance, and ecosystem health

- How the metric tree would support decision-making, such as diagnosing trade-offs, comparing pre/post redesign performance, and identifying whether changes should be iterated, rolled back, or expanded

The goal is to produce a structured measurement framework that Apple could use to evaluate the redesign holistically, balancing user experience, creator success, marketplace quality, and long-term ecosystem value.
