Create a launch plan for a high-risk Checkout feature for marketplaces

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Stripe is financial infrastructure for internet businesses; its products include payments, Checkout, Billing, Connect, Radar, Issuing, Terminal, and tax tools.

Stripe Checkout is preparing to launch a high-risk feature for marketplaces, where a single buyer payment may involve platform fees, connected accounts, seller payouts, refunds, disputes, tax, fraud controls, and compliance obligations across multiple geographies. The feature is expected to help marketplace platforms improve buyer conversion and seller monetization, but errors could directly affect money movement, merchant trust, regulatory exposure, and payment reliability.

You are the PM responsible for creating the launch plan. Your task is not to design the feature itself, but to define how Stripe should safely bring it to market: who needs to be involved, how rollout should be sequenced, what readiness checks are required, how risk should be managed, and how Stripe should decide whether to expand, pause, or roll back the launch.

Assume the audience includes engineering, risk, compliance, support, sales, partnerships, and go-to-market stakeholders. The plan should reflect Stripe’s environment: developer-facing products, high reliability expectations, global payment complexity, marketplace-specific workflows, and the need to balance speed, merchant growth, and financial safety.

The experience should consider:

- Launch phases from internal testing through limited availability, beta, general availability, and post-launch monitoring

- Clear owners across product, engineering, risk, compliance, legal, support, sales, and operations

- Dependencies such as API readiness, dashboard changes, documentation, support tooling, fraud rules, reporting, and settlement workflows

- Go/no-go criteria for each phase, including reliability, conversion, payment success, dispute/refund behavior, seller payout accuracy, and compliance readiness

- Marketplace segmentation, such as region, business model, payment method mix, transaction volume, and connected-account complexity

- Rollback and mitigation plans for payment failures, incorrect fee allocation, delayed payouts, elevated fraud, or merchant-impacting defects

- Communication plans for internal teams, pilot customers, developers, support agents, and marketplace operators

- Post-launch observability, incident response, feedback loops, and decision gates for scaling the rollout

The goal is to present a practical execution plan that shows how you would launch a financially sensitive Checkout capability in a controlled, cross-functional, and measurable way while protecting marketplace customers, buyers, sellers, and Stripe’s reliability standards.
