Problem Statement Description
Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud. Android is Google's mobile operating system; its product ecosystem includes apps, Play services, notifications, permissions, device settings, OEM integrations, and developer APIs.
Google’s executive team is reviewing the health and strategic trajectory of Android across its global consumer, OEM, developer, enterprise, and advertiser ecosystem. The ask is to define what a leadership-level metrics dashboard should include so executives can quickly understand whether Android is growing, retaining users, supporting ecosystem partners, and creating sustainable business value without compromising privacy, trust, or platform quality.
This is a metrics design question, not a request to build a UI mockup. Focus on the decisions executives need to make from the dashboard: where Android is winning or weakening, which segments or regions require attention, whether platform changes are improving the ecosystem, and how Android’s performance connects to Google’s broader business, including advertisers and privacy-preserving personalization.
The dashboard should be useful at global scale while still allowing drill-downs into meaningful cohorts such as geography, device tier, OS version, OEM, user segment, app category, and advertiser demand. It should balance high-level business outcomes with operational and product health indicators so leadership can distinguish between true product movement, measurement artifacts, and short-term noise.
The experience should consider:
- Clear metric definitions, including numerator, denominator, time window, and whether the metric represents users, devices, sessions, developers, advertisers, or revenue.
- Instrumentation sources across Android devices, Google Play, ads systems, privacy controls, OEM integrations, and enterprise deployments.
- Cohort cuts that reveal differences across markets, device price bands, OS versions, app categories, user privacy settings, and advertiser segments.
- Executive decision usefulness: which metrics indicate growth, retention, ecosystem health, monetization, trust, competitive pressure, or operational risk.
- Guardrail metrics for privacy, security, platform reliability, app quality, user trust, regulatory exposure, and partner experience.
- Trend interpretation, including seasonality, launch effects, OS upgrade cycles, device replacement cycles, and changes in measurement coverage.
- Dashboard hierarchy, from a concise executive summary to deeper diagnostic views that explain why a metric moved.
- Data quality checks and alerting for missing telemetry, delayed reporting, inconsistent denominators, or regional measurement gaps.
The goal is to describe a focused executive dashboard that helps Google leadership assess Android’s overall health and make informed product, ecosystem, and business decisions, while being explicit about what each metric means, how it is measured, which cohorts matter, and what trade-offs or risks the dashboard should surface.
