Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Netflix has observed a sharp spike in complaints from mobile-first viewers related to experiences powered by Creator Tools. These tools influence how creative assets, clips, previews, localized metadata, and promotional content are prepared and surfaced to members across global mobile experiences.
You are the PM asked to lead the root-cause analysis. The issue is occurring at global scale, but the signal is concentrated among viewers who primarily discover, browse, and watch on mobile devices. Complaints may involve broken or misleading previews, poor localization, confusing title presentation, failed playback handoffs, irrelevant creative assets, latency, or inconsistent experiences across markets and app versions.
Your task is to structure how you would investigate the anomaly, validate whether it is real, isolate the affected users and workflows, generate hypotheses, identify evidence needed, and determine mitigation and prevention steps without jumping directly to a fix.
The experience should consider:
- How to define the complaint spike, including baseline, severity, time window, affected surfaces, and complaint taxonomy.
- Segmentation by geography, language, device type, OS, app version, network quality, subscription tier, content type, and acquisition source.
- Instrumentation checks to confirm whether complaint volume reflects a true user issue or changes in reporting, routing, logging, moderation, or support workflows.
- Viewer journey points affected by Creator Tools, such as discovery, preview playback, artwork display, title detail pages, localization, recommendations, and watch start.
- Hypotheses across recent launches, content ingestion, localization workflows, creator asset uploads, personalization systems, mobile client changes, CDN/playback dependencies, and experimentation.
- Evidence needed from support tickets, app telemetry, crash/error logs, asset publishing pipelines, experiment dashboards, creator operations, and regional teams.
- Mitigation options, escalation paths, user communication needs, and criteria for rollback, disabling surfaces, or reverting recent changes.
- Longer-term prevention through monitoring, alerting, QA coverage, creator workflow validation, release gates, and global localization checks.
The goal is to demonstrate a rigorous RCA approach that protects the Netflix mobile viewing experience, separates correlation from causation, prioritizes the most impacted member segments, and creates a clear path from anomaly detection to evidence-backed action.
