Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Netflix is expanding Live Events as part of its global entertainment experience, and families are an important audience segment because viewing often happens across multiple profiles, devices, age groups, languages, and time zones. Unlike on-demand viewing, live programming introduces time-sensitive discovery, appointment viewing, simultaneous household participation, and higher expectations around stream reliability.
You are asked to define how success should be measured for Live Events serving families at global scale. The focus is not to design the event experience itself, but to establish a useful metrics framework that helps Netflix understand whether live events are creating meaningful family value, improving engagement and retention, and meeting quality expectations across diverse markets.
Your metrics should account for the full live-event journey: awareness before the event, discovery and intent, joining live, co-viewing behavior, stream completion, post-event engagement, and longer-term business impact. Because this is a global subscription product, the metrics must also be interpretable across regions, content types, household compositions, devices, and network conditions.
The experience should consider:
- Clear definitions of “family” and “family viewing,” including household, profile, kids profile, co-viewing, and shared-device scenarios.
- Success metrics with precise denominators, such as eligible households, exposed households, event-aware households, joiners, concurrent viewers, or family-profile users.
- Instrumentation needed across impressions, reminders, notifications, playback start, buffering, errors, completion, profile switching, and post-event viewing.
- Cohorts by region, language, content genre, event time, device type, subscription plan, kids versus adult profiles, and new versus existing live-event viewers.
- Guardrail metrics for streaming quality, child safety, content appropriateness, customer support contacts, churn risk, notification fatigue, and negative viewing experiences.
- Ways to distinguish true incremental family engagement from behavior that would have happened through on-demand content or other Netflix usage.
- Decision usefulness for content investment, localization, scheduling, personalization, marketing, product reliability, and future live-event programming.
The goal is to present a metrics approach that would help Netflix evaluate whether Live Events are successfully serving families worldwide, while giving product, engineering, content, and business teams actionable signals to improve the experience and make future investment decisions.
