QuestionsBehavioralUber

Describe a time you made a hard prioritization call under ambiguity

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Uber is a mobility and delivery platform; its products include rides, Uber Eats, grocery and retail delivery, freight, driver and courier tools, and marketplace pricing.

You are being asked to share a concrete past example where you had to make a difficult prioritization decision with incomplete information, competing stakeholder needs, and meaningful consequences. In an Uber-like product environment, this could relate to balancing growth, ads revenue, marketplace reliability, family user trust, safety, operational constraints, or partner outcomes when there was no clearly “correct” answer.

Your story should show how you operated when data was limited or conflicting, how you clarified the decision criteria, and how you chose between important but competing priorities. The interviewer is looking for evidence of judgment, ownership, structured thinking, stakeholder management, and comfort making decisions in fast-moving marketplace conditions.

Choose an example where the stakes were high enough to demonstrate trade-offs: for example, prioritizing a revenue-generating ads initiative versus user experience, choosing between family safety improvements and growth work, sequencing launches across markets, or deciding what not to build when teams had limited capacity.

The experience should consider:

- What made the situation ambiguous, including missing data, unclear ownership, changing goals, or conflicting signals.

- The specific priorities or options you had to choose between and why the decision was hard.

- Your role in driving the decision, not just participating in the discussion.

- The criteria you used to evaluate trade-offs such as user impact, business impact, safety, reliability, feasibility, urgency, and long-term strategy.

- How you aligned or challenged stakeholders across product, engineering, design, operations, sales, legal, or leadership.

- The decision you ultimately made and how you communicated it.

- The measurable outcome, including what improved, what was delayed or sacrificed, and what you learned.

- How you would apply that learning in a complex environment like Uber Ads serving families across different markets.

The goal is to tell a focused, high-ownership story that demonstrates your ability to make principled product decisions under uncertainty, while balancing customer trust, marketplace health, business goals, and execution realities.
