QuestionsBehavioralAirbnb

Describe a time you made a hard prioritization call under ambiguity

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.

Airbnb wants product leaders who can make thoughtful trade-offs when the path is unclear, especially in a two-sided marketplace where guest experience, host outcomes, trust, safety, and business impact are tightly connected. In this behavioral interview question, you are being asked to describe a real situation where you had to choose what to prioritize despite incomplete data, competing stakeholder opinions, or uncertain customer needs.

Anchor your story in a product environment that is relevant to Airbnb’s Guest App context, such as improving discovery, booking confidence, premium/luxury travel experiences, host quality, service recovery, personalization, or marketplace trust. The strongest examples will show how you evaluated trade-offs across users, business goals, operational constraints, and long-term product quality rather than simply choosing the loudest stakeholder request or the highest-revenue option.

Your response should focus on your ownership: what ambiguity existed, what options were on the table, how you created clarity, how you made the decision, and what happened afterward. It should also show how you handled disagreement, communicated risk, and learned from the outcome.

The experience should consider:

- The product or business context, including the user segment affected and why the decision mattered.

- The specific ambiguity you faced, such as limited data, unclear customer signals, technical uncertainty, timeline pressure, or conflicting goals.

- The prioritization options you considered and the trade-offs between guest value, marketplace health, trust, revenue, quality, or speed.

- The decision-making process you used, including evidence gathered, assumptions made, stakeholder input, and criteria for choosing.

- Your personal role in driving alignment, making the call, and handling pushback.

- The impact of the decision, including measurable results where possible and qualitative outcomes where metrics were incomplete.

- What you would do differently now, especially around de-risking, experimentation, communication, or long-term product strategy.

The goal is to demonstrate sound judgment under uncertainty, strong product instincts, and mature leadership in a marketplace environment where prioritization decisions can affect guests, hosts, brand trust, and business performance at the same time.
