Describe a time you made a hard prioritization call under ambiguity

Problem Statement Description

Product context: LinkedIn is Microsoft's professional network; its products include profiles, feed, jobs, recruiting, LinkedIn Learning, sales tools, messaging, and ads.

LinkedIn is interested in how product leaders make difficult prioritization decisions when customer needs, business goals, data, and stakeholder opinions are incomplete or in tension. For this behavioral question, you should describe a real situation where you had to choose between competing product, user, or business priorities without having perfect information.

Frame your story in a product environment relevant to LinkedIn’s context: professional identity, learning, hiring, skills, and network-driven outcomes. For example, the ambiguity could involve deciding which learner segment to serve first, whether to prioritize career switchers versus existing professionals, how to balance learner engagement with employer or enterprise needs, or how to invest in trust, skills validation, or monetization when evidence was mixed.

Your answer should demonstrate how you personally created clarity, made the call, aligned stakeholders, and owned the consequences. The interviewer is looking for evidence of judgment, structured thinking, courage, user empathy, and the ability to operate in environments where there is no obviously correct answer.

The experience should consider:

- The product or business context, including the users affected and why the prioritization decision mattered.

- The specific ambiguity: missing data, conflicting signals, stakeholder disagreement, technical constraints, market uncertainty, or unclear user value.

- The options you considered and the trade-offs between user impact, business impact, feasibility, trust, and long-term strategy.

- Your role in driving the decision, not just participating in a broader team discussion.

- How you gathered evidence, used judgment, and decided what was “good enough” to move forward.

- How you communicated the decision and handled pushback from partners, leadership, or cross-functional teams.

- The outcome, including measurable impact where possible and any unintended consequences.

- What you learned and how that experience would shape your approach to prioritization in a LinkedIn Learning or career-switcher product context.

The goal is to tell a concise, credible story that shows you can make high-quality product decisions under uncertainty while balancing member value, trust, business priorities, and long-term platform strategy.
