Problem Statement Description
Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads.
You are being asked to describe a real situation where you made a product or business decision that created a negative outcome for marketplace sellers, group commerce participants, or similar supply-side users, but was ultimately the right decision for the broader business. In a Meta context, this could relate to Facebook Groups, Marketplace-style selling behavior, seller reach, monetization, trust and safety, ranking, messaging, policy enforcement, ads, or community health.
Your answer should show how you reasoned through a trade-off between seller satisfaction and business outcomes such as user trust, buyer experience, platform integrity, revenue quality, long-term retention, operational scalability, or safety at scale. The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can make principled decisions when one important stakeholder group is unhappy, rather than optimizing only for short-term seller feedback.
The story should be concrete: what decision you owned, why sellers were disappointed, what alternatives you considered, how you communicated the decision, and what measurable business impact followed. It should also reflect self-awareness about what you learned and how you would handle stakeholder tension in a large social platform environment.
The experience should consider:
- The specific product, marketplace, group, or seller workflow involved
- The seller pain point or backlash created by the trade-off
- The business objective that justified the decision
- The data, user research, policy, or operational evidence used to make the call
- The stakeholders involved, including sellers, buyers, internal teams, policy, support, or leadership
- How you communicated and managed disappointment or trust erosion
- The measurable outcome and how success was evaluated
- What you learned about balancing ecosystem health with business priorities
The goal is to demonstrate sound judgment, ownership, empathy for affected users, and the ability to make difficult product decisions that protect long-term platform value even when a vocal stakeholder group is dissatisfied.
