In this behavioral interview question, you are being asked to describe a real situation where you used data to challenge or change a team’s product decision for a developer-facing product, such as a GitHub-like workflow, developer platform, API, CI/CD tool, repository experience, enterprise developer feature, or security/compliance capability.

The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can influence product direction in a high-judgment environment where developers are the end users, stakeholders may have strong opinions, and decisions often affect productivity, trust, ecosystem adoption, and enterprise readiness. Your example should show how you moved beyond intuition or stakeholder preference by using credible data to reframe the problem, evaluate trade-offs, and help the team make a better decision.

Choose a story where the original team direction was meaningfully different from the eventual decision, and where your contribution was central to the change. The situation should involve ambiguity, resistance, competing priorities, or risk—not simply reporting a dashboard metric everyone already agreed with.

The experience should consider:

- The product context: what developer workflow, platform capability, or enterprise use case was involved.

- The initial decision or direction the team was leaning toward, and why it seemed reasonable at the time.

- The data you used, such as usage funnels, telemetry, cohort behavior, support tickets, developer feedback, experiment results, reliability data, API adoption, or enterprise customer signals.

- The trade-offs involved, such as developer experience versus security, speed versus reliability, simplicity versus power, or individual developer needs versus enterprise requirements.

- The final decision, what changed because of your input, and the measurable product or business impact.

- What you learned about using data responsibly in developer products and how you would apply that lesson in a Microsoft or GitHub environment.

Your goal is to tell a concise but substantive story that demonstrates ownership, analytical judgment, customer empathy for developers, and the ability to change team direction through evidence-based product leadership.
