Design a marketplace quality score for marketplace sellers that improves conversion

Problem Statement Description

You are designing a seller-facing and buyer-visible marketplace quality score for a large two-sided marketplace where buyers choose among many sellers offering similar products or services. The business goal is to improve buyer conversion by increasing trust, reducing uncertainty, and helping high-quality sellers stand out without unfairly penalizing newer or niche sellers.

The current marketplace experience has friction: buyers may struggle to compare sellers beyond price, ratings may be sparse or noisy, and seller performance signals may be scattered across delivery reliability, cancellations, response time, product accuracy, dispute rates, and customer satisfaction. Sellers also need to understand what drives their standing and what actions they can take to improve it.

Your task is to define the product experience around this quality score, including who sees it, where it appears in the buyer and seller journeys, what behaviors it should encourage, and how it should support marketplace trust while improving conversion.

The experience should consider:

- Buyer decision moments where a quality signal could reduce hesitation and increase confidence

- Seller workflows for understanding, monitoring, and improving their quality score

- Fairness for new sellers, low-volume sellers, seasonal sellers, and sellers in different categories

- The balance between transparency, simplicity, and preventing gaming of the system

- How the score interacts with existing marketplace elements such as ratings, reviews, badges, search ranking, ads, and recommendations

- Edge cases such as fraud, policy violations, disputes, delivery failures, and sudden performance drops

- Accessibility, localization, and consistency across web, mobile, and seller tools

- Feedback loops that help the marketplace learn whether the score is improving trust and conversion

The goal is to design a marketplace quality score experience that buyers can understand and trust, sellers can act on, and the marketplace can use responsibly to improve conversion without degrading fairness, seller motivation, or long-term ecosystem health.
