Design a phased migration plan for Kids Profiles without hurting users

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

Netflix is planning a migration for Kids Profiles used by international subscribers. These profiles may include child-specific viewing history, recommendations, parental controls, maturity settings, language preferences, downloads, continue-watching state, avatars, and device-specific behavior across TVs, mobile, tablets, and web. The migration must preserve trust for parents and avoid disrupting children’s access to familiar content.

Your task is to design an execution plan for rolling out this migration in phases. Focus on how Netflix should sequence the work, reduce user harm, coordinate teams, monitor risk, and decide when to expand or pause the rollout. Assume the migration touches both user-facing experience and backend profile/account systems.

The experience should consider:

- Which user segments, countries, devices, account types, or profile configurations should be migrated first versus later

- How to define readiness, ownership, dependencies, and sequencing across product, engineering, data, customer support, trust/safety, localization, and content teams

- What go/no-go criteria should be used before each phase, including quality, reliability, parental-control integrity, and user-impact thresholds

- How to handle edge cases such as shared devices, multiple Kids Profiles, downloads, offline viewing, language settings, restricted titles, and inconsistent account data

- What communication, education, or in-product messaging parents and account owners may need before, during, and after migration

- What monitoring, escalation, rollback, and remediation plans are needed if users lose access, recommendations degrade, or controls behave unexpectedly

- How to measure launch health across international markets while accounting for device mix, localization, streaming quality, and customer-support signals

The goal is to present a practical phased migration plan that protects families, maintains Netflix trust and retention, and gives the organization clear decision points for safely expanding the rollout without causing avoidable disruption.
