Problem Statement Description
You are designing the technical product layer for a personal finance dashboard that helps users understand accounts, balances, spending, budgets, bills, and financial trends. The dashboard is used directly by consumers, but its data and workflows are also needed by internal teams such as support agents, risk/compliance, finance operations, and external partners or client applications.
The interview focuses on how you would define the APIs, data flows, access patterns, and system boundaries that make the dashboard trustworthy, secure, and scalable. Support agents are an important user segment: they need enough context to resolve customer issues confidently, without exposing unnecessary sensitive financial data or creating inconsistent views across tools.
You should frame the problem as a Technical PM: clarify requirements, identify key actors and systems, define how data moves from source systems into user-facing and internal experiences, and reason through trade-offs around latency, freshness, permissions, auditability, reliability, and privacy.
The experience should consider:
- Core users and use cases: consumers, support agents, internal operations teams, external integrations, and admin users.
- API requirements: read/write needs, aggregation endpoints, authentication, authorization, rate limits, error handling, versioning, and partner access.
- Data flows: account connections, transaction ingestion, categorization, enrichment, storage, caching, dashboard rendering, and support-tool visibility.
- Privacy and security: least-privilege access, PII/financial data handling, consent, masking, audit logs, retention, and regulatory expectations.
- Reliability and correctness: stale data states, reconciliation, duplicate transactions, failed syncs, degraded third-party providers, and user-facing trust indicators.
- Observability: metrics, logs, tracing, data quality checks, alerting, and operational dashboards for internal teams.
- Rollout and integration trade-offs: backward compatibility, migration from existing systems, phased launch, developer experience, and support readiness.
Your goal is to describe a clear technical product design that enables a reliable personal finance dashboard while giving internal and external teams the right data access for their jobs. Focus on the requirements, APIs, data contracts, governance, and operational safeguards needed to build confidence in the product experience.
