Design the event instrumentation for Apple TV+ at scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Apple is a consumer hardware, software, and services company; its products include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iOS, App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ is used across a broad Apple ecosystem and on non-Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, smart TVs, browsers, and partner platforms. Users often start watching on one device and continue on another, so the product team needs reliable event instrumentation that can explain viewing behavior, playback quality, subscription journeys, and cross-device continuity without compromising Apple’s privacy standards.

In this technical PM interview, you are being asked to define how event instrumentation should work at scale for Apple TV+. Focus on the product and technical requirements needed to capture useful behavioral and system signals, make them trustworthy, and support downstream use cases such as analytics, experimentation, reliability monitoring, personalization, and business reporting.

Assume the instrumentation must support a premium consumer experience, multiple device types, varied network conditions, global usage, accessibility needs, and strict privacy expectations. You do not need to design every backend service in detail, but you should clarify the scope, key events, data contracts, ownership model, and operational trade-offs.

The experience should consider:

- Core user journeys to instrument, including discovery, sign-in, subscription, playback start, pause, resume, completion, errors, downloads, and device switching.

- Event definitions, naming consistency, required properties, timestamps, session identity, device context, and content metadata boundaries.

- APIs or SDK expectations across Apple and non-Apple platforms, including versioning, compatibility, offline buffering, retries, and data quality validation.

- Privacy, consent, data minimization, anonymization or aggregation needs, retention policies, and protection of sensitive user or household information.

- Reliability requirements at Apple TV+ scale, including latency, event loss tolerance, duplicate handling, ordering issues, and graceful degradation.

- Observability and debugging needs for playback issues, entitlement failures, app crashes, CDN/network problems, and device-specific regressions.

- Rollout approach, instrumentation governance, testing, documentation, ownership across product, engineering, data, privacy, and support teams.

- Product trade-offs between measurement depth, app performance, battery/network usage, privacy expectations, and developer complexity.

Your goal is to frame a scalable instrumentation system that gives Apple TV+ teams trustworthy, privacy-conscious insight into user experience and service health across devices, while preserving the premium simplicity and reliability users expect from Apple.
