Design the event instrumentation for Games at scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

Netflix is expanding Games as part of a global entertainment experience, and the product needs reliable event instrumentation that works across game titles, devices, regions, and development teams. In this interview, you are asked to define how Games should capture, transmit, govern, and use behavioral and system events at scale without over-instrumenting, degrading gameplay, or creating inconsistent data across titles.

Assume the users of this instrumentation include game creators and studios, Netflix product teams, data science, engineering, personalization, content discovery, customer support, and business stakeholders evaluating engagement and retention. The workflow spans defining event schemas, integrating SDKs or APIs into games, validating events before launch, monitoring live telemetry, and enabling downstream analytics and decision-making.

The scope should account for both player-facing experiences and creator/developer workflows. You should focus on what must be instrumented, how data quality and privacy are maintained, how the system scales globally, and how instrumentation supports experimentation, personalization, performance monitoring, and long-term content strategy.

The experience should consider:

- Core event requirements across gameplay, onboarding, discovery, session starts, progression, purchases if applicable, errors, crashes, latency, and retention-related behaviors

- Event schema design, naming conventions, versioning, required versus optional fields, and compatibility across many game genres and platforms

- SDK, API, or data pipeline expectations for game teams, including ease of integration, validation tools, documentation, and developer feedback loops

- Reliability and observability needs, including event loss, duplication, ordering, latency, offline buffering, backfill, and real-time versus batch use cases

- Privacy, security, consent, data minimization, regional compliance, child safety considerations, and access controls for sensitive player data

- Downstream consumers such as analytics dashboards, recommendation systems, experimentation platforms, quality monitoring, creator insights, and executive reporting

- Rollout strategy across new and existing games, including migration, governance, certification before launch, and handling inconsistent legacy instrumentation

- Product and technical trade-offs between standardization and game-specific flexibility, data richness and performance overhead, speed of integration and data quality
