Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Netflix Profiles let different members within a household create, personalize, switch between, and manage viewing experiences across TVs, mobile apps, web, games, ads-supported plans, and localized markets. In this technical PM question, you are designing the event instrumentation needed to understand how Profiles are used at global scale, especially by members who create or manage profiles for themselves or others.
The focus is not on redesigning Profiles, but on defining the data foundation that product, personalization, growth, content discovery, trust, and engineering teams would rely on. The instrumentation must support reliable analysis of profile creation, selection, customization, usage, errors, and downstream engagement without compromising member privacy or data quality.
Assume Netflix operates across many devices, app versions, network conditions, household structures, and regulatory environments. Your design should account for consistency, scalability, observability, and the trade-offs between analytics completeness, product performance, privacy, and engineering complexity.
The experience should consider:
- Core user workflows around creating, editing, selecting, deleting, and using Profiles across devices.
- Event taxonomy, required properties, identifiers, timestamps, and relationships between account, household, device, session, and profile-level data.
- Data quality expectations, including deduplication, ordering, schema evolution, missing events, retries, and offline behavior.
- Privacy, consent, security, and access-control considerations for profile-level behavioral data, especially for kids or shared households.
- Instrumentation needed to support personalization, content discovery, retention analysis, ads or games experiences, and streaming quality diagnostics.
- Reliability and scale requirements for high-volume event ingestion, processing latency, monitoring, and alerting.
- Rollout approach across platforms, including backward compatibility, validation, experimentation support, and safe migration from older schemas.
- Trade-offs between client-side and server-side instrumentation, real-time versus batch use cases, and analytics depth versus product performance.
The goal is to articulate a clear technical product approach for instrumenting Profiles so that Netflix can make trustworthy product decisions, improve personalized experiences, and operate the system safely at global scale.
