Design the event instrumentation for Tableau at scale at global scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Salesforce is an enterprise CRM and cloud software company; its products include Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Commerce Cloud, Data Cloud, Einstein AI, Tableau, and Slack.

Salesforce wants to understand how Tableau is used across global enterprise customers without compromising trust, performance, data privacy, or administrative control. You are asked to design event instrumentation for Tableau at scale, covering high-volume user workflows such as viewing dashboards, authoring workbooks, connecting to data sources, sharing insights, embedding analytics, administering sites, and using AI-assisted analytics features.

The primary users affected include Tableau creators, analysts, executives, viewers, embedded analytics consumers, enterprise admins, customer success teams, product teams, and security/compliance stakeholders. The instrumentation must support product decision-making, customer health insights, operational monitoring, experimentation, billing or entitlement signals where relevant, and enterprise reporting expectations.

This is a Technical PM design problem. Focus on defining what needs to be captured, how events should be structured and governed, how instrumentation should work across clients and platforms, and how the system should scale globally while respecting enterprise-grade privacy, security, availability, and extensibility requirements.

The experience should consider:

- Key Tableau workflows and event domains, including dashboard consumption, authoring, publishing, collaboration, data connectivity, permissions, administration, embedded usage, and AI-assisted actions.

- Event schema design, naming conventions, identity resolution, tenant/account hierarchy, sessionization, metadata, versioning, and backward compatibility.

- Data collection across web, desktop, mobile, server-side services, APIs, embedded surfaces, and integrations with Salesforce ecosystem products.

- Reliability requirements such as low latency, offline or delayed delivery handling, deduplication, ordering, retries, sampling, and data quality monitoring.

- Privacy, security, and compliance constraints for global enterprise customers, including consent, data residency, PII handling, auditability, encryption, access controls, and customer admin controls.

- Scale considerations for high-volume telemetry, multi-tenant isolation, regional processing, cost management, retention, and downstream analytics use cases.

- Rollout and observability needs, including instrumentation validation, developer adoption, migration from legacy events, dashboards, alerts, and incident response.

- Product trade-offs between completeness of telemetry, customer trust, implementation complexity, performance overhead, and usefulness for product, support, and customer-facing insights.

Your goal is to frame a technically sound instrumentation design that enables trustworthy, actionable Tableau usage intelligence at global enterprise scale while preserving performance, governance, and customer confidence.
