QuestionsTechnical PMMeta

Design the high-level system for a scalable Facebook Groups feature used by influencers

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads. Facebook is Meta's social network; its products include feed, groups, pages, events, Marketplace, video, messaging surfaces, recommendations, and ads.

Meta wants to explore a scalable Facebook Groups experience tailored for influencers who manage large, highly active communities. These creators may have hundreds of thousands or millions of followers, frequent content drops, high comment volume, livestreams, paid or exclusive access needs, moderation challenges, and expectations for real-time engagement across Facebook’s social graph.

In this interview, you are being asked to define the high-level system design for such a feature from a Technical PM perspective. The focus is not on producing code or a full architecture diagram, but on translating creator and member workflows into product requirements, system components, data flows, APIs, reliability needs, privacy and safety constraints, and rollout trade-offs.

Assume the product must support both influencer-led community management and member participation at Meta scale. The design should account for spikes in traffic, content distribution, notifications, moderation, analytics, monetization surfaces, and integration with existing Facebook identity, feed, messaging, ads, and safety infrastructure.

The experience should consider:

- Core user workflows for influencers, members, moderators, and internal trust-and-safety teams

- Functional requirements such as posting, commenting, joining, role management, live engagement, announcements, analytics, and monetization hooks

- High-level system components, including group services, content storage, ranking/distribution, notification systems, moderation pipelines, and creator analytics

- APIs and data models needed to support group membership, permissions, content objects, engagement events, and creator tools

- Scalability and reliability requirements for celebrity-scale traffic bursts, viral posts, livestream events, and notification fanout

- Privacy, security, integrity, and abuse-prevention considerations, especially around impersonation, harassment, spam, paid access, and underage users

- Observability, experimentation, rollout strategy, migration considerations, and operational guardrails

- Product trade-offs between real-time engagement, feed relevance, creator control, moderation quality, latency, cost, and platform safety

The goal is to evaluate how you structure a technically complex product problem, clarify requirements, reason through system-level trade-offs, and design a scalable, safe, and observable platform experience that helps influencers build communities while fitting into Meta’s broader ecosystem.
