Problem Statement Description
Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud.
Google wants to design a scalable Google Cloud-backed feature for families, serving parents, children, guardians, and extended family members who need to safely share, manage, and access digital resources across devices and geographies. The feature may involve family groups, shared storage or content, permissions, child-safe access, account recovery, and integrations with Google’s broader ecosystem.
Users face friction around setting up family access, understanding who can see or change shared information, managing children’s permissions, handling storage limits, recovering access, and trusting that sensitive family data is private and secure. The system must work reliably at global scale while supporting different family structures, age-based policies, regional privacy requirements, and interoperability across Google services.
As a Technical PM, frame the product and system requirements at a high level. Focus on the user workflows the system must enable, the technical components and data flows needed to support them, and the trade-offs between scalability, privacy, simplicity, safety, reliability, and ecosystem integration.
The experience should consider:
- Core user roles, such as parent, child, guardian, invited adult, and account administrator
- Key workflows, including family setup, invitations, permission changes, shared access, removal, recovery, and notifications
- APIs, data models, identity, consent, and authorization requirements for family relationships and access control
- Privacy, security, child-safety, abuse-prevention, and regional compliance considerations
- Reliability expectations, latency, availability, quota handling, backup, and graceful degradation
- Integration points with Google accounts, Cloud storage, payments, devices, and other Google consumer services
- Rollout strategy, migration needs, experimentation, monitoring, and incident response
- Product trade-offs around flexibility versus simplicity, personalization versus privacy, and global consistency versus local regulation
The goal is to define a clear high-level system and product architecture that could support a family-oriented Google Cloud feature at Google scale, while demonstrating sound Technical PM judgment on requirements, dependencies, risks, observability, and user trust.
