Problem Statement Description
Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.
Amazon is exploring a scalable Marketplace feature for video subscribers that connects entertainment moments to commerce. Imagine a Prime Video or Fire TV subscriber watching content and being able to discover relevant products, offers, or services associated with what they are viewing, then move through a trusted Amazon shopping flow without disrupting the core video experience.
Your task is to design the high-level system for this feature as a Technical PM. Focus on how the product would work across the video surface, marketplace catalog, personalization, payments, fulfillment, and post-purchase experiences, while supporting Amazon-scale traffic, low-latency playback expectations, and customer trust.
Assume the feature may be used across multiple devices and content types, and must integrate with existing Amazon commerce and media infrastructure. You should clarify the user journey, define the major system components, explain key APIs and data flows, and discuss reliability, privacy, security, rollout, and operational trade-offs.
The experience should consider:
- How video subscribers discover marketplace items without degrading playback or content engagement
- Core requirements for catalog matching, recommendations, availability, pricing, cart, checkout, and order status
- APIs and data contracts between video clients, marketplace services, identity, payments, ads/promotions, and fulfillment systems
- Latency, scalability, caching, and failure handling for peak viewing events or popular releases
- Privacy, consent, personalization boundaries, and safe use of viewing behavior for commerce relevance
- Security considerations for authentication, payments, fraud prevention, and account protection
- Observability, experimentation, abuse monitoring, and operational health metrics
- Rollout strategy across devices, geographies, subscriber cohorts, and content partners
The goal is to evaluate your ability to translate a cross-domain product idea into a scalable technical architecture, identify the most important product and engineering trade-offs, and communicate how the system would deliver a reliable, trusted, and commercially meaningful experience for Amazon video subscribers.
