Design the technical product architecture for notification system at large scale

Problem Statement Description

You are asked to design the technical product architecture for a notification system that can operate at large scale across web, mobile, email, SMS, push, and in-product surfaces. The system serves internal product teams and developers who need to trigger, configure, personalize, and monitor notifications without repeatedly building one-off delivery logic.

The core product challenge is to support useful engagement while protecting customer trust. Notifications must be timely, reliable, relevant, and compliant with user preferences, while avoiding spam, duplicate sends, excessive latency, or failures during traffic spikes. The architecture should work across multiple product domains such as consumer apps, marketplaces, SaaS, fintech, or AI-enabled products.

Frame the problem as a Technical PM: clarify requirements, define system boundaries, identify major components and data flows, and explain trade-offs between scalability, reliability, privacy, cost, and developer usability. You are not expected to write code, but you should be able to describe how APIs, services, queues, templates, user preferences, delivery providers, observability, and rollout controls fit together.

The experience should consider:

- Developer workflows for creating, testing, triggering, and debugging notification campaigns or transactional messages

- Core functional requirements such as targeting, template management, localization, scheduling, prioritization, retries, and deduplication

- User preference management, consent, opt-outs, quiet hours, frequency caps, and channel selection

- APIs, event ingestion, message queues, delivery orchestration, provider integrations, and data storage needs

- Reliability expectations, latency targets, failure handling, backpressure, disaster recovery, and graceful degradation

- Privacy, security, access control, auditability, and compliance considerations for user data and message content

- Observability through logs, metrics, tracing, delivery status, alerting, and developer-facing diagnostics

- Rollout strategy, experimentation support, rate limiting, abuse prevention, and operational controls

The goal is to describe a scalable and responsible notification platform that helps product teams engage users effectively while giving developers clear interfaces, operators strong visibility, and end users meaningful control over what they receive.
