Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla wants to understand how frequently Model Y vehicles are actively used in a priority urban market on a typical day. In this interview, you are being asked to estimate daily active usage, not to design a feature or propose a go-to-market plan.
Assume the focus is Model Y owners or primary drivers in one important market, such as a major metro area or country where urban commuting, charging access, EV adoption, and connected-car behavior matter. “Active usage” should be clarified by you: it could mean vehicles driven at least once per day, trips taken per day, or active driving hours/miles per day, depending on how you frame the estimate.
Your task is to build a logical, transparent estimate using reasonable assumptions. The interviewer will be looking for how you define scope, choose the right unit, segment the population, estimate adoption and frequency, and sanity-check the result against real-world behavior.
The experience should consider:
- The exact market boundary: city, metro area, state, or country
- The unit of estimation: active Model Y vehicles per day, daily trips, miles driven, or driving sessions
- The relevant owner segments, especially urban commuters, families, rideshare users, and occasional drivers
- Estimated Model Y installed base in the chosen market
- Daily usage frequency by weekday/weekend, commute patterns, errands, school runs, and leisure trips
- EV-specific constraints such as home charging, public charging availability, parking, range confidence, and urban congestion
- Sensitivity of the estimate to key assumptions like ownership base, active-day rate, and trips per active vehicle
- Sanity checks using comparable vehicle ownership, commute behavior, EV adoption, or connected-car usage patterns
The goal is to produce a defensible directional estimate and explain your reasoning clearly. You should make assumptions explicit, show how changes in the largest drivers would affect the answer, and conclude with a practical range that Tesla could use for planning around product engagement, charging demand, connected services, or urban mobility behavior.
