Problem Statement Description
Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.
Airbnb wants to understand the potential one-year adoption of Business Travel by Superhosts at global scale. In this guesstimate, you are estimating how many existing Superhosts could opt into, qualify for, or meaningfully support Business Travel within a 12-month period across Airbnb’s worldwide marketplace.
Focus on the host-side adoption problem, not total business-travel demand or total bookings. Superhosts are a high-quality supply segment, but not all of them have listings, availability, amenities, locations, pricing, or operating preferences that fit business traveler needs. Your estimate should account for global variation in host supply, urban versus leisure destinations, regulatory constraints, and competition from hotels and other travel platforms.
You should define the scope clearly: what counts as “adopting Business Travel,” whether adoption means enrollment, listing eligibility, active acceptance of business travelers, or completed business-travel stays. Make reasonable assumptions, expose the key drivers, and show how sensitive the estimate is to changes in those assumptions.
The experience should consider:
- The starting population of global Airbnb Superhosts and how you would approximate it.
- The share of Superhosts with listings suitable for business travelers, including location, Wi-Fi, workspace, self check-in, reliability, and review quality.
- Geographic segmentation by major business markets, mixed leisure/business markets, and low-relevance destinations.
- Host willingness to participate, including concerns about weekday availability, guest expectations, cancellations, damage, support, and payout reliability.
- The difference between being eligible, opting in, receiving demand, and completing a business-travel booking.
- Expected adoption over one year, including awareness, onboarding, product nudges, incentives, and operational support.
- Key assumptions that would most affect the final estimate and how you would sanity-check them against marketplace behavior.
- Guardrails such as host quality, guest safety, trust, dispute resolution, and supply health.
Your goal is to produce a clear, defensible estimate with a structured calculation, explicit assumptions, and a practical range rather than a single unexplained number. The interviewer is looking for how you size the opportunity, handle uncertainty, segment the market, and reason about adoption in a two-sided travel marketplace.
