Problem Statement Description
Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads.
Meta is preparing for a major Meta Quest launch aimed at VR enthusiasts, including new device buyers, existing Quest owners upgrading, creators, and social VR users. You are asked to estimate the infrastructure or operational load required to support launch day and the immediate launch window, such as account activations, app downloads, multiplayer/social sessions, customer support volume, content-store traffic, and device setup flows.
This is a guesstimate exercise, so the focus is not on knowing Meta’s internal numbers. The interviewer wants to see how you define the scope, choose reasonable units, break demand into user segments, estimate peak versus average load, and sanity-check whether the resulting operational needs are plausible for a large consumer hardware and platform launch.
You should clarify what “support” means for your estimate: backend capacity, bandwidth, concurrent users, operational staffing, support tickets, logistics touchpoints, or a combination. You should also make clear whether you are estimating launch day, launch week, or the first month, and whether the estimate covers global demand or a specific market.
The experience should consider:
- Scope and unit of estimation, such as peak concurrent users, total activations, download bandwidth, support contacts, or fulfillment volume.
- Relevant user populations, including pre-order buyers, day-one purchasers, existing Quest users, gift recipients, developers, and VR creators.
- Adoption and usage assumptions, including sell-through rate, setup completion rate, app download frequency, session length, and time-of-day peaks.
- Operational workflows, such as device unboxing, account login, software updates, store browsing, social onboarding, multiplayer use, and troubleshooting.
- Infrastructure drivers, including authentication, content delivery, firmware updates, cloud saves, multiplayer services, messaging/social graph features, and safety systems.
- Support-load drivers, including payment issues, login problems, hardware defects, returns, refunds, parental controls, and setup confusion.
- Sensitivity of the estimate to key assumptions, especially launch size, geographic concentration, update file size, peak-hour behavior, and repeat usage.
- Sanity checks against comparable consumer electronics launches, gaming platform launches, app-store traffic patterns, or large-scale online events.
The goal is to produce a structured, defensible estimate that helps Meta plan capacity and operations for a smooth Quest launch, while clearly explaining assumptions, ranges, risks, and which variables would most change the final load estimate.
