Estimate the infrastructure or operational load needed to support a major Meta Quest launch

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads.

Meta is preparing for a major Meta Quest launch targeting VR enthusiasts, with expected spikes across device activation, account login, software updates, app store downloads, multiplayer/social features, live launch content, customer support, and creator or developer activity. You are asked to estimate the infrastructure or operational load required to support this launch.

This is a guesstimate exercise, so the focus is on structuring the problem clearly, defining the scope, and making reasonable assumptions rather than knowing exact Meta numbers. Consider what “load” means across both technical systems and human operations: concurrent users, bandwidth, compute, storage, support tickets, moderation, payments, and launch-day reliability needs.

Your estimate should reflect a realistic launch workflow: users purchasing or receiving devices, unboxing and setting them up, downloading updates and apps, joining social or multiplayer experiences, watching launch content, and contacting support if something fails. You should also consider that demand may vary by region, time zone, existing Quest owners versus new users, and launch-day versus launch-week behavior.

The experience should consider:

- The scope of the estimate: launch day, launch weekend, or launch month, and which systems are included or excluded

- The unit of load being estimated, such as concurrent users, device activations, bandwidth, server requests, support contacts, or moderation volume

- The addressable population, including existing Quest users, new buyers, VR enthusiasts, creators, and developers

- Adoption and frequency assumptions, including setup rates, app download behavior, session length, and peak concurrency

- Infrastructure dimensions such as authentication, software updates, store traffic, multiplayer/social services, video or live content, and telemetry

- Operational dimensions such as customer support staffing, payment issue handling, trust and safety review, and developer support

- Sensitivity to key assumptions, especially peak-hour concentration, update size, regional rollout, and percentage of users encountering issues

- Sanity checks against comparable consumer electronics launches, gaming launches, or large-scale social platform traffic spikes

The goal is to produce a defensible estimate with clear assumptions, logical segmentation, and practical checks, so Meta could use it to understand launch readiness, identify likely bottlenecks, and decide where additional capacity or operational coverage may be needed.
