How to structure your estimation answer

Interviewers care about a defensible model more than an exact number. State assumptions, keep units visible, and sanity-check the result.

  1. Clarify the geography, time period, population, and exact quantity being estimated.
  2. Choose a top-down or bottom-up model and write the equation before inserting numbers.
  3. Use rounded assumptions, explain their source, and keep units consistent through every calculation.
  4. Give a range, test the answer against a known benchmark, and name the assumption with the most sensitivity.
