QuestionsGuesstimateMeta

Estimate the number of daily transactions or interactions generated by Facebook Groups

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads. Facebook is Meta's social network; its products include feed, groups, pages, events, Marketplace, video, messaging surfaces, recommendations, and ads.

Meta wants to understand the scale of daily activity generated by Facebook Groups, with particular attention to how teen users may participate in group-based communities, interest spaces, school/local groups, creator-led groups, and event-oriented conversations. In this guesstimate, “transactions or interactions” should be interpreted as user actions within Groups that create measurable activity, such as viewing, posting, commenting, reacting, sharing, joining, inviting, voting, RSVPing, or messaging through group-related surfaces.

Your task is to estimate the number of daily Facebook Groups interactions globally or within a clearly stated scope. You should define the scope up front, identify the relevant user population, estimate how many users engage with Groups on a typical day, and reason through the average number of group interactions per active user.

The estimate should account for differences in behavior across active members, passive viewers, creators/admins, and teen users, while recognizing that Facebook Groups competes for attention with Discord, TikTok, YouTube, Snap, and other community or entertainment platforms.

The experience should consider:

- The unit being estimated: daily interactions, transactions, or both, and what actions are included or excluded.

- The population base: Facebook users, Facebook Groups members, daily active Facebook users, teen users, or another defined segment.

- Adoption assumptions: what share of users belong to Groups and what share actively engage on a given day.

- Frequency assumptions: typical daily views, posts, comments, reactions, joins, shares, or other group actions per active user.

- Segmentation by intensity: lurkers, occasional participants, frequent commenters, group admins, creators, and highly active community members.

- Geographic and demographic variation, especially how teen usage may differ from older Facebook users.

- Sensitivity checks around the largest assumptions, such as daily active Group users and interactions per active user.

- Sanity checks against broader social platform behavior, community engagement norms, and the relative role of Groups within Facebook.

The goal is to produce a clear, defensible order-of-magnitude estimate, not a precise internal number. Your final answer should show the structure of your reasoning, the assumptions that drive the estimate, and how the result would change if key assumptions were higher or lower.
