Estimate the number of daily transactions or interactions generated by Marketplace

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.

Amazon Marketplace connects customers with third-party sellers across a large catalog of physical goods, with activity spanning browsing, search, product detail views, add-to-cart events, purchases, seller order handling, fulfillment updates, returns, and customer-seller support. In this guesstimate, you are being asked to estimate the daily volume of transactions or interactions generated by Marketplace.

The key challenge is to define the unit of estimation clearly before calculating. “Transactions” may mean completed third-party seller orders, while “interactions” could include a much broader set of customer and seller actions across the marketplace workflow. A strong estimate should make an explicit scope choice, explain the assumptions behind it, and avoid mixing incompatible units.

Your estimate should consider:

- The geography and scope: U.S. only vs. global Amazon Marketplace.

- The unit being estimated: purchases, order items, seller-side actions, customer interactions, or total platform events.

- The relevant population: active Amazon shoppers, Prime users, third-party sellers, or daily marketplace visitors.

- Adoption and frequency assumptions: how often users browse, buy, return, review, message, or otherwise interact.

- Marketplace share: how much of Amazon retail activity comes from third-party sellers versus first-party retail.

- Seasonality and day-to-day variation, including holidays, promotions, and weekday/weekend effects.

- Sensitivity of the estimate to major assumptions such as conversion rate, items per order, and interactions per purchase.

- Sanity checks against known marketplace scale, operational feasibility, and expected order-of-magnitude ranges.

The goal is to produce a clear, defensible daily estimate with transparent assumptions, logical segmentation, and quick validation checks—not to know Amazon’s internal numbers.
