Problem Statement Description
You are evaluating how to scale an admin audit log experience used by team leads to understand sensitive changes across their teams, such as permission updates, member removals, policy changes, integrations, data exports, or configuration edits. The product goal is to increase admin confidence: team leads should feel they can quickly verify what happened, who did it, when it happened, and whether action is needed.
The current or proposed system must support growing usage across larger teams, higher event volumes, more granular permissions, and stricter compliance expectations. Team leads may use the audit log during routine monitoring, incident investigation, access reviews, customer escalations, or compliance reporting, so latency, completeness, accuracy, and usability all affect trust.
As a Technical PM, your task is to evaluate the technical trade-offs involved in scaling this capability. You should frame the product requirements, data and API needs, reliability expectations, privacy and security constraints, rollout considerations, observability, and the trade-offs between performance, cost, retention, searchability, and data integrity.
The experience should consider:
- Core user workflows for team leads, including investigation, filtering, exporting, alerting, and verifying sensitive admin actions
- Audit event requirements, including schema consistency, actor identity, timestamps, affected objects, metadata, and event ordering
- Data architecture trade-offs for high-volume ingestion, storage, indexing, retention, backfill, and query performance
- API and permission design, including role-based access, scoped visibility, pagination, rate limits, and integration use cases
- Reliability and trust guarantees, including completeness, immutability, delayed events, duplicate handling, and failure modes
- Privacy, security, and compliance constraints around sensitive user actions, data minimization, encryption, and access monitoring
- Rollout and migration risks, including legacy logs, customer communication, phased adoption, and backward compatibility
- Observability and operational readiness, including service-level indicators, alerting, anomaly detection, and incident response
The goal is to demonstrate how you would reason through the technical and product decisions required to scale an admin audit log in a way that measurably improves team lead confidence without compromising security, reliability, usability, or operational efficiency.
