Problem Statement Description
You are the Technical PM for an ecommerce marketplace experience used by first-time buyers. The core purchase journey spans catalog search, personalized recommendations, checkout, payments, and order state updates. As traffic, catalog size, seller count, and geographic coverage grow, the current architecture must scale without degrading customer trust or purchase conversion.
In this interview, you are asked to evaluate the technical trade-offs involved in scaling these interconnected services. The focus is not on naming a single architecture, but on showing how you reason across product requirements, system boundaries, user experience, operational risk, data quality, privacy, reliability, and cost.
Your evaluation should account for the fact that first-time buyers are especially sensitive to slow search results, irrelevant recommendations, confusing checkout flows, failed payments, duplicate charges, missing confirmations, and unclear order status. Seller catalog quality, payment reliability, accessibility, and responsible use of customer data should also be considered.
The experience should consider:
- Functional requirements across search, recommendations, cart, checkout, payment authorization, order creation, fulfillment updates, returns, and customer notifications
- Service boundaries, APIs, data contracts, ownership, and how state flows between catalog, pricing, inventory, payment, and order systems
- Latency, availability, consistency, idempotency, retries, failure handling, and graceful degradation across critical purchase paths
- Privacy, security, fraud risk, payment compliance, customer data usage, and responsible personalization constraints
- Instrumentation for conversion funnel health, payment success, search relevance, recommendation quality, order-state accuracy, and incident detection
- Rollout strategy, migration risk, backward compatibility, experimentation, feature flags, and rollback planning
- Operational trade-offs around cost, infrastructure complexity, on-call load, seller data quality, accessibility, and global scale
The goal is to frame a clear technical product evaluation that helps leadership decide how to scale the marketplace purchase journey while protecting buyer trust, improving conversion, and managing engineering complexity.
