Problem Statement Description

You are evaluating how to scale a field service routing product used by retail staff, where the immediate product goal is activation: getting store associates, managers, or field reps to successfully complete their first meaningful routed visit, task, or service workflow. The system may need to assign routes, sequence locations, account for staff availability, handle store operating constraints, and adapt to real-world changes such as delays, cancellations, traffic, or inventory/service readiness.

The challenge is not only to design routing logic, but to reason through the technical trade-offs required as usage grows across many stores, regions, roles, and operational patterns. You should consider how the product experience supports a new retail staff member from onboarding through first route acceptance and completion, while balancing routing quality, latency, reliability, data accuracy, privacy, and operational complexity.

Assume stakeholders include retail staff in the field, store managers, regional operations teams, customer support, data science/optimization teams, and platform engineering. The interview is focused on your ability as a Technical PM to frame requirements, evaluate architecture and API/data implications, make trade-offs explicit, and connect technical decisions back to activation outcomes.

The experience should consider:

- Core user workflows for retail staff activation, including onboarding, route assignment, task understanding, navigation, completion, and exception handling.

- Functional and non-functional requirements for routing at scale, such as latency, throughput, route freshness, availability, offline tolerance, and accuracy.

- Data inputs and integrations, including staff schedules, store locations, task priority, service windows, inventory or readiness signals, traffic/location data, and completion events.

- Trade-offs between real-time optimization, batch routing, rule-based assignment, heuristic approaches, and more advanced optimization or AI-driven methods.

- API and system design considerations, including route generation, route updates, mobile client sync, event ingestion, permissions, and auditability.

- Privacy, security, and trust implications around employee location, performance data, access control, and data retention.

- Rollout and observability needs, including instrumentation for activation, route acceptance, completion, latency, failures, override rates, and operational escalations.

- Product trade-offs between routing efficiency, staff autonomy, manager control, fairness, explainability, and ease of adoption.

Your goal is to evaluate the technical options and constraints clearly enough to recommend how the team should reason about scaling the routing system while improving activation, without jumping directly to a single implementation.
