Evaluate technical trade-offs for scaling local services marketplace for restaurant owners

Problem Statement Description

You are evaluating how to scale a local services marketplace used by restaurant owners to discover, compare, book, and manage vendors such as equipment repair, cleaning, pest control, payroll support, marketing, delivery operations, and compliance services. As the marketplace grows across cities and service categories, restaurant owners need confidence that sensitive business information—location, revenue signals, vendor needs, staff contacts, payment data, operational issues, and service history—is handled responsibly.

The interview focuses on technical product judgment: how you would reason through architecture, data flows, integrations, privacy controls, reliability needs, and rollout trade-offs while preserving a usable marketplace experience. The goal is not to design every screen or pick a single technology stack, but to show how you would evaluate options, clarify requirements, and balance scale, trust, marketplace liquidity, and operational complexity.

Consider the full workflow: a restaurant owner creates or updates a business profile, searches for local providers, requests quotes, shares job details, messages vendors, schedules work, pays or tracks invoices, reviews service quality, and may receive personalized recommendations. Service providers and internal marketplace operations teams may also need access to certain data, creating privacy, permissions, and auditability challenges.

The experience should consider:

- What restaurant-owner data is required for matching, quoting, personalization, payments, support, and fraud prevention, versus what can be minimized or abstracted.

- API and data-sharing boundaries between restaurant owners, service providers, payment systems, messaging tools, CRM/support systems, analytics, and third-party integrations.

- Privacy assurance mechanisms such as consent, access control, data retention, deletion, masking, audit logs, and user-facing transparency.

- Scalability trade-offs across search, recommendations, messaging, booking, notifications, payments, and vendor availability as usage grows by geography and category.

- Reliability expectations for time-sensitive service needs, including outages, degraded modes, retries, and support escalation.

- Security and compliance risks around business identity, payment data, employee contact details, location information, and potentially sensitive operational records.

- Observability and instrumentation needed to detect privacy incidents, integration failures, marketplace abuse, data-quality issues, and trust-impacting regressions.

- Rollout choices, migration risks, experimentation boundaries, and how to validate that privacy assurance improves trust without reducing marketplace conversion or vendor responsiveness.

Your goal is to frame the technical trade-offs clearly, identify the most important product and engineering decisions, and explain how you would guide a cross-functional team toward a scalable marketplace architecture that protects restaurant owners’ data while still enabling useful local service discovery and transactions.
