Evaluate technical trade-offs for scaling mobile checkout recovery for content moderators

Problem Statement Description

You are evaluating a mobile checkout recovery capability used by content moderation teams who need visibility into abandoned, failed, or interrupted checkout flows on mobile. The users are not only end customers attempting to complete a purchase, but also operational moderators, team leads, and trust/safety reviewers who may need to review flagged checkout sessions, identify policy-sensitive content or transactions, and coordinate follow-up across teams.

The product goal is to scale checkout recovery while improving team visibility: moderators should be able to understand what happened in a checkout session, why recovery was triggered, who has reviewed it, and what action is pending or completed. The technical challenge is to assess trade-offs across mobile reliability, backend event processing, data freshness, privacy, moderation workflows, and operational scale.

Assume the current system works for a smaller volume of checkout recovery events but is becoming harder to operate as mobile traffic, recovery triggers, and moderation review queues grow. The interview should focus on how you reason through requirements, architecture choices, risks, and product trade-offs rather than proposing a fully detailed implementation.

The experience should consider:

- Mobile checkout events that may be delayed, duplicated, dropped, or received out of order due to app/network conditions

- APIs and data models needed to connect checkout recovery status with moderation review state and team-level visibility

- Reliability expectations for recovery triggers, moderator dashboards, notifications, and audit trails

- Privacy and security constraints around payment-adjacent data, user identifiers, moderator access, and sensitive content

- Observability needs, including event instrumentation, failure monitoring, queue health, latency, and reconciliation

- Rollout choices such as phased launches, feature flags, backfills, migration from legacy workflows, and rollback plans

- Product trade-offs between real-time visibility, system complexity, moderator workload, user trust, and operational cost

Your goal is to frame the technical trade-offs clearly, identify the most important system and product constraints, and explain how you would evaluate whether the scaled checkout recovery experience gives moderation teams the visibility they need without compromising reliability, privacy, or user experience.
