Evaluate technical trade-offs for scaling offline order capture for account managers

Problem Statement Description

Account managers often capture customer orders while away from reliable connectivity: in field visits, trade shows, customer sites, or during calls where speed matters more than system access. These orders may later need to sync into core systems such as CRM, ERP, inventory, billing, fulfillment, approvals, and customer communications. As usage grows across more account managers, regions, product catalogs, pricing rules, and customer segments, the technical design must scale without creating duplicate, invalid, delayed, or untraceable orders.

You are asked to evaluate the technical trade-offs involved in scaling an offline order capture capability for account managers. The product goal is integration success: orders captured offline should reliably flow into downstream systems with the right data quality, status visibility, and operational controls.

Assume the current workflow involves account managers entering order details on a mobile or web experience, saving them when connectivity is weak or unavailable, and syncing them later. The interview discussion should focus on requirements, system behavior, data contracts, reliability, privacy, security, rollout, observability, and the product trade-offs between account-manager speed and downstream correctness.

The experience should consider:

- Account manager workflows across offline entry, draft saving, validation, sync, conflict handling, and order confirmation.

- Data requirements for customers, products, pricing, discounts, tax, inventory, approvals, attachments, and order status.

- API and integration design across CRM, ERP, inventory, billing, fulfillment, identity, and notification systems.

- Reliability trade-offs such as local storage, retry logic, idempotency, duplicate prevention, queueing, and eventual consistency.

- Security and privacy constraints for storing customer and commercial data on devices, including access control and data expiration.

- Observability needs such as sync success rate, failure reasons, latency, data validation errors, manual rework, and support escalations.

- Rollout considerations across regions, account teams, device types, product catalogs, and integration partners.

- Product trade-offs between fast offline capture, strict validation, user flexibility, operational risk, and implementation complexity.

Your goal is to frame the technical decision space clearly, identify the most important trade-offs, and explain how you would evaluate whether the offline order capture system is ready to scale while achieving successful integration into downstream business systems.
