Problem Statement Description
Product context: DoorDash is a local commerce and delivery platform; its products include restaurant delivery, DashPass, grocery and retail delivery, merchant tools, and dasher tools.
DoorDash is considering adding AI capabilities to the Dasher App to improve the delivery experience for Dashers, especially in suburban markets where distances are longer, order density can vary, pickup/drop-off instructions may be inconsistent, and earnings predictability matters. These capabilities could affect real-time decision-making, navigation support, order acceptance, customer/merchant communication, support resolution, or delivery issue handling.
As a Technical PM, your task is to explain the technical trade-offs DoorDash should evaluate before introducing AI into the Dasher App. Focus on how AI would fit into the existing logistics marketplace, where incorrect or slow decisions can affect delivery reliability, Dasher earnings, customer experience, merchant operations, and marketplace balance.
This is not asking for a full product design or a single recommended AI feature. The goal is to reason through the technical implications of adding AI-powered experiences in a high-volume, real-time mobile app used by independent contractors operating in dynamic physical environments.
The experience should consider:
- What types of AI capabilities may be relevant in the Dasher workflow and where they would sit in the app experience
- Latency, reliability, offline behavior, and mobile performance constraints during active deliveries
- Data requirements, model inputs, data quality, and risks from incomplete or biased marketplace signals
- Trade-offs between on-device processing, server-side inference, third-party AI services, and hybrid approaches
- Privacy, security, consent, and safe handling of location, earnings, customer, merchant, and delivery data
- Integration with routing, dispatch, support, fraud, marketplace pricing, and notification systems
- Observability, experimentation, model monitoring, failure modes, and rollback mechanisms
- Product trade-offs across Dasher trust, operational efficiency, unit economics, and fairness across markets
Your goal is to clearly articulate the major technical decisions, risks, dependencies, and product implications DoorDash should evaluate before launching AI capabilities in the Dasher App, while showing how those trade-offs would influence rollout, reliability, and user trust.
