Explain the technical trade-offs of adding AI capabilities to Photoshop

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Adobe is a creative, document, and marketing software company; its products include Creative Cloud, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Adobe Express, Firefly, and Experience Cloud.

Adobe is evaluating how to add AI-powered capabilities to Photoshop for photographers while preserving the precision, performance, and trust that professional creative workflows require. You are asked to discuss the technical trade-offs a PM should consider when introducing these capabilities into a mature desktop and cloud-connected product used for high-resolution image editing.

Focus on the photographer workflow: importing large files, making selective edits, retouching, compositing, color correction, exporting client-ready assets, and iterating non-destructively. AI features may help reduce manual effort, accelerate edits, or enable new creative outputs, but they also introduce constraints around latency, model quality, compute cost, privacy, reliability, explainability, and creative control.

Your response should frame the product and engineering decisions involved rather than proposing a single feature. Consider how Adobe would balance professional-grade expectations, ethical AI use, enterprise and individual customer needs, integration with existing Photoshop tools, and competitive pressure from newer AI-native creative products.

The experience should consider:

- Requirements for AI-assisted editing in high-resolution, layered, non-destructive Photoshop workflows

- Trade-offs between on-device, cloud-based, and hybrid AI processing

- Performance expectations, including latency, memory usage, GPU dependence, offline access, and large file handling

- Data, privacy, security, consent, and content provenance considerations for photographers and enterprise users

- Model quality issues such as accuracy, consistency, hallucination, bias, and user control over generated outputs

- APIs, infrastructure, cost, scaling, and integration with existing Adobe Creative Cloud services

- Rollout, experimentation, observability, failure handling, and user trust signals

- Product trade-offs between automation, creative control, simplicity, and Photoshop’s professional depth

The goal is to demonstrate how you reason as a Technical PM about introducing AI into a complex creative product: identifying the key system and user constraints, surfacing meaningful trade-offs, and explaining how those trade-offs affect product quality, adoption, trust, and long-term platform strategy.
