Problem Statement Description
Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS. Prime Video is Amazon's streaming video service; its products include movies, series, live sports, rentals, channels, recommendations, downloads, and ad-supported viewing.
Prime Video is considering adding AI-powered capabilities to improve how customers discover, evaluate, and enjoy video content. The target audience includes price-sensitive “deal seeker” customers who may rotate between streaming services, respond to bundles or promotions, and expect clear value from their Prime membership.
As a Technical PM, you are being asked to explain the technical trade-offs involved in introducing AI into a large-scale streaming product. The discussion should consider Prime Video’s real operating environment: high traffic, multiple devices, personalized experiences, licensed and original content, global markets, privacy expectations, and Amazon’s broader ecosystem across commerce, devices, media, and cloud infrastructure.
Your response should not simply list AI features. It should show how you would reason through requirements, data dependencies, model performance, latency, cost, reliability, security, rollout complexity, and customer impact when evaluating whether and how to add AI capabilities.
The experience should consider:
- Which customer workflows AI may affect, such as search, recommendations, content previews, accessibility, support, or personalized merchandising
- Data requirements, including viewing behavior, catalog metadata, customer preferences, entitlement data, and device context
- API and system integration needs across Prime Video apps, backend services, experimentation platforms, and content systems
- Reliability, latency, and scalability expectations for a streaming experience across TVs, mobile, web, and Fire TV devices
- Privacy, security, consent, and responsible AI considerations, especially for personalization and customer data usage
- Cost trade-offs between model quality, inference frequency, cloud infrastructure usage, caching, and real-time responsiveness
- Rollout and observability needs, including experiments, monitoring, fallback behavior, model drift, and operational alerts
- Product trade-offs between customer delight, trust, content partner constraints, business goals, and operational complexity
The goal is to demonstrate how you would evaluate AI capabilities as a Technical PM at Amazon: translating customer and business opportunities into technical requirements, identifying key risks and trade-offs, and framing a pragmatic path for building, launching, and operating AI features in Prime Video without compromising customer trust or streaming reliability.
