How would you improve reliability and latency for Slack at global scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Salesforce is an enterprise CRM and cloud software company; its products include Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Commerce Cloud, Data Cloud, Einstein AI, Tableau, and Slack. Slack is Salesforce's workplace collaboration product; its products include channels, DMs, huddles, workflow automation, search, app integrations, and enterprise administration.

Slack is a mission-critical collaboration layer for enterprise teams, including sales leaders who rely on real-time messaging, channels, huddles, notifications, workflow automations, and integrations with CRM systems. At Salesforce scale, reliability and latency directly affect customer trust, productivity, and the ability of distributed sales organizations to coordinate deals, escalations, approvals, and customer follow-ups.

You are asked to approach this as a Technical PM problem: define how you would assess and improve Slack’s reliability and latency globally without compromising enterprise security, data governance, extensibility, or user experience. The focus is not only on infrastructure performance, but also on product trade-offs across messaging speed, availability, consistency, integrations, notifications, search, and cross-region collaboration.

Your response should show how you would identify the most important user journeys, translate them into technical and product requirements, work with engineering and operations teams, and create a rollout approach that improves customer outcomes while managing risk for large enterprise deployments.

The experience should consider:

- Critical Slack workflows for sales leaders, account teams, and enterprise admins across regions and time zones

- Reliability and latency definitions for messaging, notifications, huddles, search, workflows, and CRM-connected experiences

- APIs, data flows, integrations, and dependency points across Slack, Salesforce, and third-party enterprise systems

- Trade-offs between low latency, data residency, consistency, failover behavior, cost, and compliance requirements

- Observability needs, including service-level indicators, user-impact metrics, alerting, incident detection, and post-incident learning

- Privacy, security, enterprise trust, and AI/data-governance considerations in any global architecture or product change

- Rollout strategy, experimentation limits, migration risks, customer communication, and rollback planning

The goal is to frame a rigorous technical product plan that demonstrates how you would diagnose the highest-impact reliability and latency gaps, prioritize improvements for enterprise customers, align cross-functional teams, and make decisions that strengthen Slack’s role as a trusted global collaboration platform within the Salesforce ecosystem.
