Problem Statement Description
You are evaluating the launch of a rental home search and verification experience for a real estate marketplace. The product helps relocating renters discover available homes, assess listing trustworthiness, understand locality fit, and submit qualified interest to property owners, brokers, or leasing teams.
This is a metrics interview question. Your task is not to design the feature itself, but to define how success should be measured after launch. The marketplace has multiple stakeholders: renters want accurate, fresh, and trustworthy listings; property partners want serious leads; operations teams may be involved in verification; and the business wants scalable growth without degrading trust.
The measurement approach should account for the high-consideration nature of rental decisions, where users may browse repeatedly, compare neighborhoods, contact multiple properties, and complete parts of the journey offline. It should also consider constraints such as listing freshness, broker incentives, verification cost, privacy, accessibility, and operational load.
The experience should consider:
- Clear success metric definitions, including what counts as a qualified property lead and which users or sessions are included in the denominator
- Funnel instrumentation across search, listing views, verification signals, shortlist/save actions, contact attempts, lead submission, and downstream property responses
- Cohorts such as relocating renters, local renters, first-time users, repeat searchers, verified versus unverified listings, and different geographies or inventory types
- Quality and trust metrics that distinguish more leads from better leads, including renter intent, listing accuracy, duplicate/fake listing reduction, and partner response quality
- Guardrail metrics for user harm, spam, privacy issues, accessibility gaps, verification turnaround time, operational cost, and marketplace imbalance
- Data freshness and attribution challenges, especially where broker follow-up, availability changes, or lease closure may happen outside the product
- Decision usefulness: how the metrics would help decide whether to scale, refine verification, change lead qualification, or adjust marketplace operations
The goal is to present a practical success measurement framework that shows whether the launch improves renter trust and search outcomes while generating high-quality property leads in a scalable, reliable, and responsible way.
