Problem Statement Description
You are designing improvements to a large-scale content discovery feed for new international users during their first week after signup. These users may arrive with different languages, cultural norms, content expectations, network conditions, device capabilities, and levels of familiarity with the product. The feed is a core surface for helping them understand what the product offers and whether it is worth returning to.
The current challenge is to improve early discovery without assuming that the same onboarding, ranking, personalization, or content formats that work in one market will work globally. You should think through the end-to-end first-week journey: signup, initial preferences, first feed session, content interactions, follow-up sessions, feedback signals, and the transition from cold-start recommendations to a more personalized experience.
This is a product design problem focused on user workflow friction and experience quality, not only feed ranking. Consider what new international users need to feel oriented, represented, in control, safe, and motivated to come back, while balancing scalable product systems and local market differences.
The experience should consider:
- Key international user segments, such as language groups, new-market users, diaspora users, travelers, or users with low bandwidth or older devices
- First-week moments that shape discovery, including onboarding, first feed impression, repeated sessions, and early preference learning
- Cold-start personalization challenges when the product has limited explicit or behavioral signals
- Localization needs across language, content relevance, cultural norms, accessibility, and trust cues
- User controls and feedback mechanisms that help people improve their feed without excessive effort
- Quality, safety, and integrity concerns, including sensitive content, misinformation, or culturally inappropriate recommendations
- Success indicators tied to long-term engagement rather than only short-term clicks or session time
- Practical constraints around global scale, operational complexity, content availability, ranking systems, and experimentation across markets
Your goal is to frame the user problem clearly, identify the most important first-week discovery frictions for international users, and design an experience that improves early relevance, trust, and repeat engagement while remaining scalable across diverse markets.
