Problem Statement Description
Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.
You are the PM responsible for shaping Spotify’s Ads roadmap for the next quarter, with particular attention to family and household listening contexts across music, podcasts, and other audio formats. The business needs to grow ad monetization while protecting listener trust, personalization quality, creator value, and advertiser outcomes in a competitive audio market.
The quarterly planning cycle has more candidate initiatives than available capacity across product, engineering, design, data science, sales, ad operations, policy, and legal. You need to decide what should ship, what should be deferred, and how the team will sequence work so that launches are measurable, reliable, and aligned with Spotify’s broader strategy.
This is an execution-focused question: the interviewer is looking for how you translate ambiguous business and user needs into an operating plan, not just a list of ideas. Your roadmap should show how you evaluate trade-offs, manage dependencies, define launch criteria, and reduce risk while keeping the team focused.
The experience should consider:
- The key users and stakeholders: listeners, families or household accounts, advertisers, creators, sales teams, and internal ad platform teams.
- How to prioritize between revenue growth, listener experience, ad relevance, brand safety, personalization, and creator monetization.
- The operating plan for a single quarter, including sequencing, milestones, owners, and cross-functional dependencies.
- Go/no-go criteria for launching or scaling roadmap items, including experiment readiness and measurement confidence.
- Risks such as ad fatigue, privacy concerns, targeting sensitivity, policy constraints, inventory quality, and negative retention impact.
- Rollback or mitigation plans if a launch harms listener engagement, advertiser performance, or system reliability.
- Communication needs across leadership, sales, customer support, creators, and regional teams.
The goal is to present a clear quarterly roadmap recommendation for Spotify Ads, explain why the chosen items matter now, and show how you would drive execution from planning through launch, measurement, and iteration without overcommitting the organization.
