Problem Statement Description
You are the product manager responsible for mobile onboarding for a large-scale digital product. New users install the app, create or access an account, grant required permissions, complete any setup steps, and ideally reach the first meaningful activation moment. The team has identified onboarding as a key lever for improving activation, but engineering capacity for the next planning cycle is limited.
Your task is to prioritize the mobile onboarding roadmap under these constraints. You should focus on how to evaluate competing opportunities, sequence work, align cross-functional teams, and make trade-offs between improving conversion, reducing friction, maintaining trust, supporting accessibility, and managing launch risk.
Assume there are multiple possible initiatives, such as simplifying signup, improving permission questions, reducing form fields, adding education or personalization, fixing reliability issues, improving localization, or instrumenting drop-off points. You do not need to design every feature in detail; the emphasis is on execution planning and prioritization.
The experience should consider:
- The core onboarding funnel stages, from app open to first meaningful activation
- The new-user segments or cohorts that may experience different friction points
- How to compare roadmap items using impact, effort, confidence, urgency, and risk
- Engineering, design, data, legal, security, support, and marketing dependencies
- Sequencing decisions, including quick wins, foundational work, experiments, and larger bets
- Go/no-go criteria, success metrics, guardrails, and rollback plans
- Communication with stakeholders when capacity limits force trade-offs
- Launch risks such as broken flows, user confusion, privacy concerns, or degraded trust
Your goal is to describe a practical operating plan for deciding what gets built first, what is deferred, how the team executes with limited capacity, and how you would know whether the roadmap is improving activation for new mobile users.
