Problem Statement Description
Local merchants—such as small retailers, food vendors, salons, service providers, and neighborhood businesses—often use payment checkout tools while serving customers in real time. Their main job is not “processing a payment”; it is completing a sale or service quickly, accurately, and with enough confidence that the customer leaves satisfied and the merchant can move on to the next task.
In this product design exercise, you are asked to redesign the payments checkout experience for these merchants so they can complete that main job faster. Consider the end-to-end workflow from entering or confirming the order amount, selecting payment method, applying taxes/fees/discounts if relevant, handling customer confirmation, receiving payment status, and issuing a receipt. The experience may involve mobile devices, tablets, point-of-sale terminals, QR payments, card readers, or web-based checkout flows.
Focus on the friction merchants face during busy, high-pressure moments: unclear steps, slow loading, payment failures, confusing confirmation states, switching between tools, customer interruptions, network constraints, refunds or corrections, and the need to maintain trust. Your scope should include both merchant-facing and customer-facing touchpoints where they directly affect checkout speed and success.
The experience should consider:
- The primary merchant personas and operating contexts, such as counter service, mobile service, delivery, pop-up stalls, or appointment-based businesses
- The merchant’s core workflow before, during, and immediately after checkout
- Points of delay, confusion, error, or abandonment in the current checkout journey
- Payment method diversity, including cash, card, wallet, QR, invoice, or pay-later flows where relevant
- Trust and clarity around payment status, failures, receipts, refunds, and dispute-sensitive moments
- Accessibility, low-connectivity environments, device constraints, and varying levels of merchant digital fluency
- How the redesigned experience balances speed with accuracy, fraud prevention, compliance, and customer confidence
- Success signals such as faster checkout completion, higher successful payment rate, fewer support issues, and improved merchant satisfaction
Your goal is to define a clear product design approach that identifies the right user problems, prioritizes the most important checkout frictions, and outlines an improved experience that helps local merchants complete transactions faster without sacrificing reliability, trust, or usability.
