Root cause a sudden decline in retention among creators using App Store

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Apple is a consumer hardware, software, and services company; its products include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iOS, App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV+. App Store is Apple's app marketplace; its products include app discovery, downloads, purchases, subscriptions, reviews, developer distribution, and payment flows.

You are investigating a sudden decline in retention among creators using the App Store. In this context, “creators” refers to app developers, studios, and digital content businesses that rely on the App Store to publish, update, monetize, and grow their products across Apple’s ecosystem.

The issue may show up as fewer creators returning to App Store Connect, fewer app updates, reduced submission activity, lower participation in monetization features, or creators shifting attention to competing platforms. Your task is to frame the anomaly, determine whether the decline is real, isolate where it is happening, and develop a structured approach to finding the root cause.

This is an RCA interview question. Focus on how you would investigate the problem rather than proposing a final solution upfront. Consider Apple’s expectations around premium user experience, privacy, developer trust, platform quality, and ecosystem health.

The experience should consider:

- How creator retention is defined, including the numerator, denominator, time window, and expected creator behavior

- Whether the decline is broad-based or concentrated by creator segment, geography, app category, business model, lifecycle stage, or platform

- Instrumentation and data-quality checks across App Store Connect, submission flows, analytics, payments, review outcomes, and developer communications

- Possible funnel breakpoints, such as login, build upload, app review, metadata updates, pricing changes, subscriptions, in-app purchases, or analytics access

- External and ecosystem factors, including policy changes, economic conditions, competitor platform moves, regulatory pressure, or creator sentiment

- Hypotheses across product experience, trust and safety, monetization, discoverability, developer support, technical reliability, and communication clarity

- Evidence needed to prioritize causes, quantify impact, and separate correlation from causation

- Immediate mitigation, longer-term prevention, monitoring, and stakeholder communication across product, engineering, developer relations, finance, policy, and support teams

The goal is to demonstrate a rigorous investigation plan that can identify why creators are disengaging from the App Store, assess the business and ecosystem impact, and guide Apple toward a confident next step without compromising platform quality or developer trust.
