Problem Statement Description
Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads.
You are being asked to share a real example of influencing a difficult stakeholder in a product environment similar to Meta Quest, where hardware, software, immersive experiences, safety, social connection, and family use cases may intersect. The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can build alignment across strong opinions, competing priorities, and ambiguous product trade-offs.
Frame your story around a situation where a stakeholder had meaningful influence over the product direction, launch quality, user experience, safety posture, or business outcome. In a Meta Quest-like context, this could involve disagreements across product, engineering, design, privacy, safety, legal, partnerships, creator ecosystem, or go-to-market teams, especially where families, younger users, shared devices, social features, or immersive content were involved.
Your response should focus less on simply “convincing” someone and more on how you understood their motivations, used data or user insight, created trust, navigated conflict, and drove a decision or outcome without relying solely on authority.
The experience should consider:
- The product context, user segment, and why the stakeholder disagreement mattered
- Who the difficult stakeholder was and what made the interaction challenging
- Your specific role, level of ownership, and what was at stake
- How you diagnosed the stakeholder’s concerns, incentives, or constraints
- The evidence, customer insight, data, prototype, or business rationale you used to influence the discussion
- How you balanced product quality, user safety, business impact, technical feasibility, and timeline
- The measurable or observable outcome of your influence
- What you learned and how it would apply to a Meta Quest product environment serving families
The goal is to demonstrate mature product leadership: the ability to influence cross-functional partners, handle disagreement constructively, make progress in ambiguous environments, and keep the user and business outcome at the center of the decision.
