Problem Statement Description
Zepto operates in quick commerce, where busy households rely on fast, dependable delivery for everyday essentials such as milk, eggs, bread, diapers, cleaning supplies, and personal care items. In this environment, customers may forget to reorder until the last moment, while the platform must handle real-time inventory, dark-store stockouts, picker accuracy, substitutions, pricing, incentives, and local regulatory constraints.
This behavioral question asks you to share a real example where you influenced a team without having formal authority, ideally in a complex product or operations setting with multiple stakeholders and competing incentives. The interviewer is looking for evidence of how you aligned people around a problem, built credibility, navigated ambiguity, and drove progress despite not owning all teams or resources directly.
Your story should be relevant to a product environment where customer trust, operational feasibility, scale, and compliance all matter. The focus is not only on the outcome, but on how you diagnosed the issue, persuaded stakeholders, handled resistance, and reflected on what you learned.
The experience should consider:
- The specific user or business problem you were trying to solve, such as replenishment, stockouts, basket completion, or substitution quality
- The stakeholders involved, such as product, operations, supply, engineering, data, legal, category, customer support, or store teams
- Why you lacked formal authority and what influence mechanisms you used instead
- The constraints you had to work within, including scale, incentives, regulatory limits, data quality, privacy, or operational load
- The trade-offs or disagreements that made the situation difficult
- The actions you personally took to create alignment and move the work forward
- The measurable or observable impact of your influence on customers, teams, or business outcomes
- What you learned and how you would apply it in a high-speed quick-commerce environment like Zepto
The goal is to demonstrate strong cross-functional leadership, structured problem-solving, and judgment under constraints. Your answer should make clear what you owned, how you influenced others, what changed because of your actions, and why that experience prepares you to work on complex customer and operations problems at Zepto.
