Problem Statement Description
Product context: DoorDash is a local commerce and delivery platform; its products include restaurant delivery, DashPass, grocery and retail delivery, merchant tools, and dasher tools.
DoorDash is operating in a complex local commerce marketplace where grocery launches often involve enterprise merchants, store operations, inventory data, fulfillment workflows, Dashers, and customers expecting reliable delivery. In this behavioral question, you are being asked to describe a real situation where a product launch did not go as planned and you took ownership of the recovery.
Your example should be substantial enough to show how you handled ambiguity, urgency, cross-functional pressure, and marketplace consequences. A strong context could involve a grocery or merchant-facing launch, such as onboarding a large retailer, rolling out a new ordering workflow, changing substitution logic, introducing a fulfillment process, or launching a feature that affected delivery reliability, merchant ROI, Dasher experience, or customer trust.
Focus on what actually happened, what your role was, how you diagnosed the mistake, how you made trade-offs under pressure, and how you helped the team recover. The interviewer is looking for evidence of accountability, judgment, communication, resilience, and learning—not a perfect launch story.
The experience should consider:
- What the product launch was, who it served, and why it mattered to the business or marketplace
- What went wrong, how quickly it was detected, and what impact it had on customers, merchants, Dashers, operations, or revenue
- Your specific ownership in the launch and in the recovery, especially if multiple teams were involved
- How you assessed severity, prioritized actions, and aligned stakeholders such as engineering, operations, support, sales, analytics, or merchant partners
- What immediate mitigation steps were taken, including any rollback, pause, communication, manual workaround, or customer/merchant remediation
- How you balanced competing priorities such as reliability, speed, merchant trust, unit economics, and team morale
- What changed afterward in the launch process, product quality bar, monitoring, experimentation, or stakeholder communication
- What you personally learned and how that changed your approach to future launches
The goal is to present a concise but high-signal story that demonstrates mature product leadership in a high-stakes marketplace environment. Your answer should make clear that you can own mistakes, protect users and partners, lead recovery without defensiveness, and convert a difficult launch into stronger product and operational discipline.
