Problem Statement Description
You are being asked to share a real example of leading ambiguous work in a local services marketplace, specifically for new users who are trying to move from intent to a successful service handoff. This could involve the transition between a customer request and a provider accepting, arriving, quoting, completing, or otherwise taking ownership of the job.
The interviewer is looking for evidence of how you operated when the problem was not clearly defined: unclear ownership, incomplete data, multiple stakeholder incentives, operational complexity, trust and safety concerns, or gaps between product experience and real-world service delivery. The focus is not only on what you shipped, but how you created clarity and improved the quality of the handoff between user, platform, and service provider.
Your story should show how you understood the needs of new users, identified where handoffs were breaking down, aligned cross-functional partners, and drove measurable improvement. It should also reflect your judgment in balancing customer trust, provider reliability, marketplace efficiency, and operational feasibility.
The experience should consider:
- What made the work ambiguous, such as unclear problem definition, fragmented ownership, limited data, or competing stakeholder goals
- The specific new-user journey and where handoff quality was weak or risky
- How you gathered evidence from users, providers, operations, support, data, or field observations
- Your role in creating structure, priorities, and alignment across product, design, engineering, operations, analytics, or marketplace teams
- The decisions or trade-offs you personally drove, especially where customer experience and marketplace efficiency conflicted
- How handoff quality was defined and measured, such as completion rate, provider acceptance, response time, cancellations, support contacts, trust signals, or first-time user retention
- The impact of the work and how you knew the outcome improved
- What you learned and how you would apply that learning in a similar product environment
The goal is to demonstrate ownership, structured thinking, customer empathy, and execution in an ambiguous marketplace setting. A strong answer should make clear what you personally led, why the problem mattered for new users, how you improved handoff quality, and what durable product or operational learning came from the work.
